The IPPC community began preparing for CPM-16 months ago, with a series of preparatory and coordination meetings through Regional Plant Protection Organizations (RPPOs). Members of CPM Bureau, Standards Committee, Implementation and Capacity Development Committee and the IPPC Secretariat participated in many of these meetings. Some RPPOs also took the opportunity to coordinate among themselves, including the five RPPOs from the Americas (CAHFSA, CAN, COSAVE, NAPPO and OIRSA)where they discussed, shared views and identified common positions on CPM-16 topics, especially those considered of high priority. FAO estimates that up to 40 per cent of crops – worth over USD 200 billion – are lost to plant pests and diseases every year. At its seventieth anniversary, the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) continues to implement its mission of protecting plant health and the environment while facilitating the safe trade of plants and plant products across international borders. |
