Standard and Trade Development Facility strengthening SPS systems to adapt to climate change

Posted on Thu, 15 Feb 2024, 09:02

The IPPC Secretariat is pleased to share an update on the work of the Standards and Trade Development Facility (STDF) in addressing sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) risks worsened by climate change.

In its briefing note entitled "Strengthening SPS systems to mitigate and adapt to climate change", the STDF highlights how climate change is affecting the world's food supply, agricultural trade and the capability of countries to maintain strong SPSG systems. Read the briefing note here.

The STDF also organizes webinars to increase understanding and awareness of the implications of climate change on emerging SPS risks and global trade flows, and how this phenomenon is altering the application of SPS measures.

During the recent Conference of Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP 28) in Dubai in December 2023, the STDF organized a dialogue event to discuss issues including investing in enhanced SPS capacities in more sustainable agri-food systems and markets. The discussion was also on emphasizing collaboration, sharing insights and best practices from STDF's safe trade partnership, and ongoing STDF learning assessments to integrate environmental, biodiversity, and climate change considerations into SPS capacity development.
