Summary

During routine surveillance, samples were taken from bleeding cankers of two beech trees on 7 and 8 June 2006. P. ramorum was identified from these samples. The trees grow at locations where earlier outbreaks of P. ramorum occurred on Rhododendron plants. Monitoring of these locations will continue.

Danger
This is the first finding of Phytophthora ramorum on Fagus sylvatica trees. The finding is not considered a phytosanitary risk to other countries. Main concern is the capability of P. ramorum to infest a European native tree species in the Netherlands. Phytosanitary measures are taken to ensure pest freedom at places of production and to eradicate or contain infestations in public green, in line with European Commission Decisions 2002/757/EC and 2004/426/EC.
