Summary

In October 2022, Sweet potato weevil(Cylas formicarius)was detected in Hamamatsu city, Shizuoka prefecture in Japan.

In November 2024, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Japan (MAFF) confirmed that eradication has been successfully completed after conducting intensive control measures in collaboration with Shizuoka prefecture.

Danger
Sweet potato weevil is considered as a significant and damaging pest of sweet potato and is a quarantine pest for Japan. In Japan, Sweet potato weevil is present only in some parts of Southwestern Islands and Ogasawara Islands, and the movement of host plants is restricted by the Plant Protection Act.
