In September, 2017, Heterodera schachtii (beet cyst nematode(BCN)) was detected in Japan for the first time. Soon after the Ministry of Agriculture Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) as NPPO was informed of the detection, MAFF conducted surveillance in order to delimit the infected area, and it was found that the infected agricultural fields were limited in a district of Hara Village, Nagano Prefecture. MAFF thus designated the district as the emergency control area on 25 April 2018 based on the Plant Protection Act and has started pest control measures within the area, which include prohibition of cultivation of host plants and soil fumigation in the infected fields, and restriction of movement of underground parts of host plants and other plants with soil attached.
