The Australian Government, through the Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment advises that on commencement of the new Biosecurity Act 2015 on 16 June 2016, some important changes to Australia’s biosecurity system come into effect. From 16 June 2016, some selected goods will no longer require an import permit provided the import conditions on the Australian Government’s Biosecurity Import Conditions System (BICON) are met. Goods affected include selected fresh produce and selected plant products. BICON has been updated to remove the requirement for an import permit for those goods affected. BICON will remain the primary source of information on Australia’s import conditions. It will provide the import conditions and requirements including any official certification required from the exporting country’s national plant protection organization that an importer must meet. National plant protection organizations exporting goods to Australia need to be aware of these changes. For information on BICON and access to the system, please see the web address below. An Introduction to BICON learning module is also available to assist users to understand the basic functions within BICON.
