Short Description

Australia manages biosecurity threats to plants, animals and human health according to the Biosecurity Act 2015. The Biosecurity Act applies to Australia, and its external territories including Norfolk Island, Christmas Island, and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands. Goods and conveyances travelling to Australia are subject to biosecurity control as soon as they enter Australian airspace or the coastal sea of these areas which generally extends 12 nautical miles from the coast. Australia has designated First Points of Entry (FPOE) (airports and seaports) at which goods can first arrive in Australia. These first points of entry have been assessed against the FPOE Biosecurity Standards and have appropriate infrastructure or processes in place to manage biosecurity risks. This ensures that vessels and aircraft enter Australia at a location that has appropriate facilities and personnel to manage the biosecurity risks to an acceptable level. Not all First Points of Entry may be determined to unload all classes of animal, plant or goods. The suitability of each commodity against the intended FPOE should be checked before export.
