Strawberry germplasm at Bundaberg, Queensland
Summary

Leaves exhibited discrete, angular light-green lesions on the upper surface, while the lesions appeared coalesced and water-soaked on the underside. Phase microscopy of sections through lesions revealed profuse oozing, indicative of bacterial infection. The origin of the incursion has not been established.

Danger
An incursion of Xanthomonas fragariae was detected in a strawberry germplasm collection in May 2010 in Bundaberg, Queensland. Diagnosis was achieved by traditional bacteriological methods of isolation and characterisation, as well as molecular characterisation of cultures and ooze suspensions. Following the identification, all of the potentially affected strawberry germplasm was destroyed and all equipment thoroughly decontaminated. Continuing surveillance and trace forward operations have not revealed any new infections. Further surveys undertaken during the 2011 strawberry growing season on the two closest commercial properties based on proximity to the detection at 1.5km and 5.2kms. The first property was surveyed in August 2011 and the second in September 2011. The property were the pest was originally detected was surveyed on 02 September 2011. There were no detections of Angular Leaf Spot of Strawberries. Eradication was declared on 22 September 2011.
