Summary

Confirmation of a single detection on a vine in April 2006 and a second detection in late May 2006. The DPIF&M were expecting to declare Australia"s freedom from grapevine leaf rust in July 2006 following an eradication program that has been running since 2001. Infected grapevines have been removed and DPIF&M are developing an Options Paper regarding the continuation of the National Grapevine Leaf Rust Eradication Program in the Darwin area.

Danger
Two further detections of grapevine leaf rust in Darwin have resulted in the Northern Territory Department of Primary Industries, Fisheries and Mines (DPIF&M) withdrawing a request to jurisdictions for acceptance of pest free areas status for the current Quarantine Area in the Northern Territory. Grapevine leaf rust is a potential threat to Australia s winegrape, wine and tablegrape industries if it spreads into TiTree in Central Australia or into the southern production areas.
