CPM-19 Side session: The Systems Approach: Principles, practical tools, and an upcoming IPPC Workshop

Date: Thursday 20 March 2025 | 13:00 – 14.45 (CET)
Venue: Red Room (A121), FAO Headquarters, Rome and online

In brief: Participants in this side session will enhance their knowledge about the benefits and principles of building Systems Approaches, as outlined in the International Standard for Phytosanitary Measures ISPM 14 (The use of integrated measures in a systems approach for pest risk management). Phytosanitary systems approaches serve as a crucial framework for mitigating phytosanitary risks associated with the trade of agricultural and horticultural products, both domestically and internationally.
Systems Approaches also help national plant protection organizations (NPPOs) increase market access by providing options to apply measures to address phytosanitary issues instead of relying on only one approach to solving these complex problems.

Participants will also be introduced to available capacity development resources and tools on the International Phytosanitary Portal (IPP). The session will also be a precursor to an upcoming IPPC workshop on System Approaches in 2026.
