Side session: Innovative research and tools to prevent and contain Fusarium TR4 spread

Date: Wednesday 19 March 2025 | 13:00-14:45 (CET)
Venue: Red Room (A121), FAO Headquarters, Rome and online

In brief: Following the successful side session on Fusarium oxysporumf.sp.cubense Tropical Race 4 (TR4) at CPM-18 in 2024, this knowledge-sharing session will highlight innovative technology, research and projects to prevent the entry and manage the spread of Fusarium TR4. The session is part of the IPPC Secretariat’s coordination of Fusarium TR4 activities and will foster awareness and collaboration in the global fight against the world’s biggest threat to banana production.
There will be presentations on the latest research about banana varieties resistant to Fusarium TR4, innovative capacity development tools such as virtual reality simulation rooms, and the role of public-private partnerships in managing high-risk pests such as Fusarium TR4.

Side session: The Systems Approach: Principles, practical tools, and an upcoming IPPC Workshop

Date: Thursday 20 March 2025 | 13:00 – 14.45 (CET)
Venue: Red Room (A121), FAO Headquarters, Rome and online

In brief: Participants in this side session will enhance their knowledge about the benefits and principles of building Systems Approaches, as outlined in the International Standard for Phytosanitary Measures ISPM 14 (The use of integrated measures in a systems approach for pest risk management). Phytosanitary systems approaches serve as a crucial framework for mitigating phytosanitary risks associated with the trade of agricultural and horticultural products, both domestically and internationally.
Systems Approaches also help national plant protection organizations (NPPOs) increase market access by providing options to apply measures to address phytosanitary issues instead of relying on only one approach to solving these complex problems.

Participants will also be introduced to available capacity development resources and tools on the International Phytosanitary Portal (IPP). The session will also be a precursor to an upcoming IPPC workshop on System Approaches in 2026.

Science session: The Importance of Plant Health within One Health

Date: Thursday 20 March 2025 | afternoon plenary of CPM-19
Venue:Plenary Hall, FAO Headquarters, Rome and online

In brief: Human, animal, plant, and ecosystem health are inextricably linked, making it essential to establish and promote harmonized strategies to address common threats. This session will therefore involve discussions on the importance of plant health in the One Health approach to disease prevention and management, explore synergies between plant health and One Health, foster strategic partnerships, and provide actionable recommendations for integrating plant health in the One Health discourse and framework. The science session is part of the IPPC’s efforts to promote the integration of plant health in One Health, following outcomes of and recommendations from CPM-18 in 2024.
