The IPPC Secretariat issues a call for the collection of information on:
• Pest reference collections including physical, digital etc. (summary description including accessibility)
• Planned Diagnostic trainings (next two years)
• Diagnostic training resources
The information gathered will be used to support implementation of the Commission on Phytosanitary Measures (CPM) 11 recommendation on the importance of pest diagnosis and made available on the Phytosanitary Resources webpage.
In April 2016, CPM 11 adopted a recommendation on the importance of pest diagnosis (CPM 11 report Appendix 16). The recommendation underlines the importance of accurate and rapid pest diagnosis for export certification, import inspections, the application of appropriate phytosanitary treatments, effective pest surveillance and successful eradication programmes. The recommendation addresses contracting parties, Regional Plant Protection Organizations (RPPOs) and the IPPC Secretariat and emphasizes their role for the development of pest diagnostic capacities.
In June 2016, at its 8th meeting the CDC discussed ways forward to implement the CPM recommendation on pest diagnosis. The CDC suggested that a compilation of information on available pest reference collections and trainings, for posting on the Phytosanitary Resources page, would enhance this work.
Based on the above considerations the IPPC Secretariat is issuing a call for the collection information on:
• Pest reference collections including physical, digital etc. (summary description including accessibility)
• Planned diagnostic trainings (next two years)
• Diagnostic training resources
Information can be contributed through the Phytosanitary Resources page in any language, including unofficial United Nations (UN) languages. For questions, please contact the IPPC Secretariat ([email protected] and [email protected]). Please indicate in the subject line of the email: Recommendation on the importance of pest diagnosis.
