Rice blast, caused by Magnaporthe oryzae, is generally considered the most important disease of rice worldwide because of its extensive distribution and destructiveness under favourable conditions. Infection of rice plants occurs from airborne conidia and symptoms appear as lesions or spots. M. grisea and M. oryzae are both used in the literature as the causal agents of the disease rice blast. However taxonomic opinion would appear to favour M. oryzae for reasons of nomenclatural priority and taxonomic appropriateness. Hence it is used in this protocol.
