IPPC-CIHEAM-Bari Training Course on Developing National Phytosanitary Capacities

The International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) Secretariat in collaboration with the International Center for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies (CIHEAM) in Bari delivers an intensive two-weeks training course on “Developing National Phytosanitary Capacities”. Representatives of EPPO and NEPPO, two Regional Plant Protection Organizations, also contribute to the training. This course was delivered in 2015 and 2017, it is intended to be delivered every year at the beginning of June.

This course is provided to the students of the CIHEAM Master programme on Sustainable Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Technologies for Mediterranean Fruit and Vegetable Crops. The course is also open to 10 NPPO staff, worldwide. In the previous years, NPPO staff from Malta and Turkey were trained. Every year, the IPPC Secretariat opens a call on the IPPC for NPPOs to register. Participants from all over the world apply and are selected on the basis of their experience and technical competence.

This training course is delivered in English and is free of charge. Participants are responsible for the cost of their travel and accommodation.

The curriculum covers the following topics: an overview of the IPPC, International Standards on Phytosanitary Measures (ISPMs), Commission on Phytosanitary Measures (CPM) Recommendations, Guides and training materials as well as other strategies agreed by the CPM. This course also provides a forum for the exchange of information among representatives of various NPPOs attending the training. This training builds on the IPPC technical guides: Establishing an NPPO, Operation of an NPPO, Managing relationships with stakeholders, etc. The course material is reinforced through interactive exercises.
