Resumen

In February 2007 Clavibacter michiganensis spp. michiganensis was found on a propagation company of tomato plants. The pest is regulated as a harmful organism for the European Community (Annex II A section II). The pest was detected following complaints of tomato fruit producing companies in the Netherlands and one other Member State of the european Union. On the propagation company only a very small number of tomato plants was affected of the total crop. This includes several tomato varieties, of which the seed originate in different EU countries and one country outside EU. Relevant EU countries have been informed. The possible source of the outbreak is still being investigated, but is most likely related to contaminated seed. Further investigation will also be done to determine whether measures have been carried out for relevant seed lots in line with EU requirements. Forward tracing revealed that a very small number of plants were infested at four companies producing tomato fruits for the final consumer, all located in the Netherlands. Relevant plants have been destroyed and hygienic measures were taken to prevent further spread.
