The Republic of Korea together with the APPPC organized a CPM-12 side session on the IPPC in Asia attended by over 100 participants. The side session s objective was to highlight the different phases of development of plant quarantine in the Republic of Korea and its connection with the growth of the Korean economy. From a recipient of Official Development Assistance (ODA) from the United Nations, to an active role as donor of ODA, the Korean NPPO has developed into an advanced quarantine agency, in a position to host and support capacity building activities in the Asia region and to support individual countries in the region as well.
The panelist Kyu-Ock Yim, Senior Researcher from the Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency/MAFRA of the Republic of Korea presented on the progress and plans for the way forward for the Korean Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency, including application of new technologies.
Panelist Yongfan Piao, Executive Director of the Asia Pacific Plant Protection Commission presented the achievements of the APPPC in trade facilitation in the region over the past 10 years. The presentation covered the achievement in promoting the safe trade of agriculture products, including the development of pest risk analysis for SALB, negotiation tools for market access, the implementation of export procedures such as e-Phyto and the management of pesticides.
Presenters also highlighted the plans to develop a surveillance programme, the development regional standards, and the containment of emerging pest incursion. Finally, presenters highlighted the challenges and opportunities arising from the collaboration with animal health and food safety agencies and the application of the One Health approach.
