ملخص

On October 2, 2015, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) reported the detection of a single apple maggot fly (Rhagoletis pomonella) in West Kelowna, British Columbia (BC). In October 2016, the CFIA confirmed the presence of a second, single apple maggot fly in Kelowna, BC, approximately 11 kilometres from the initial detection in 2015. Due to the distance and time between the detections, they were treated as two independent events that were transient, actionable, and under eradication.

In response to both detections, official control measures were applied and delimitation surveys were conducted in accordance with ISPM 26: Establishment of pest free areas for fruit flies [Tephritidae]. Delimitation surveys conducted around the 2015 and 2016 detection sites over the following three years did not detect any other life stage of R. pomonella. The pest is now considered to be absent from the pest free area in BC.

Ongoing annual detection surveys for R. pomonella will continue to be used to verify that the pest is absent from the pest free area in BC.
