Black rot of grape is caused by the ascomycete fungus Guignardia bidwellii and can lead to substantial yield losses in humid regions when it is not effectively managed. It has been described as one of the most economically important and destructive diseases of grapes. Most cultivars of Vitis vinifera as well as French/American hybrids and American bunch grapes are susceptible, while varieties of muscadine range in disease susceptibility from resistant to very susceptible. The fungus may be spread on grapevine cuttings and fruit.
